The schools of the Sioux City Diocese have been greatly blessed by the generous support of donors who help to make Catholic education affordable. Over the 2019-2020 school year, 59 recepients at Sacred Heart were awarded a total of $89,614 in tuition assistance. This was out of $2,925,420 awarded across the diocese. Msgr. James Lafferty was superintendent of schools from 1965-1986 and was a strong lobbyist to the Iowa legislature for school choice. He believed there should be as few barriers preventing low income families from taking advantage of the option of a Catholic education. He helped to promote legislation related to transportation, textbooks, and technology.
By contributing to the Monsignor Lafferty Tuition Foundation, donors can receive a tax credit certificate worth 65% of their donation.
The Monsignor Lafferty Tuition Foundation (MLTF) is the Student Tuition Organization (STO) created by the Diocese of Sioux City in 2006 as part of the Educational Opportunities Act passed by Iowa Legislature. Sixteen Catholic school systems are located in 24-county diocese providing a faith-based education to nearly 6,000 students each year. MLTF awards tuition grants to eligible families while providing donors with an Iowa income tax credit certificate worth 65% of their gift.
Can MLTF accept non-cash items?
Yes, non-cash items such as shares of stock or mutual funds are accepted. Grain donations can also be accepted with an approximate $1,000 minimum value. Click here for more frequently asked questions about MLTF.
